|Case Study: Leadership
Virtusa is a global IT Consulting and Outsourcing specialist employing over 6,000 people based in the USA, UK, India and Sri Lanka. It achieved prominence for its quality work when it was ranked in FIN TEC and GLOBAL SERVICES 100 in 2008 & 2009. Sage commenced its relationship with Virtusa in 2000, when the company was growing exponentially. Our challenge was to develop leadership skills of highly qualified technical people, of which many were straight out of university. Business growth required people to be promoted rapidly into leadership roles of teams in Advanced Technology Centres, many of whom also had control of staff in customer sites in the US. The purpose being to ensure there was capacity to balance objective achievement with team and individual needs.
The Sage Solution
We developed a Team Centered Leadership program which was customised to suit the knowledge worker environment. Every person with leadership responsibilities attended the program including the MD and the Management Committee. Each program had a senior manager and/or the HR Manager attend on Day 2 to take part in the issue management session, where participants were encouraged to discuss what they liked about the organisation and what they thought needed to be improved. Where there was scope, senior managers or HR worked with participants to build in improvements.
The program also included a component on how to manage cultural diversity. Sage was in constant contact with participants post the training, to support application of learning on the job with coaching. We also facilitated numerous other programs for senior management. Approximately 600 people attended the program.
